What to Expect at Your Child's First Martial Arts Class
Trying something new is a big step for a child, and honestly for a parent too. You want to know what you are walking into. So here is exactly what happens at a first class at Grandmaster Martial Arts, from the moment you park to the ride home.
Before you come
Your child does not need a uniform or any gear for their first class. Comfortable athletic clothes are perfect: a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants without zippers or buttons. We train barefoot, so shoes come off at the edge of the mat.
Bring a water bottle. Take off any jewelry and tie back long hair. And feed them a light snack beforehand, because a hungry kid runs out of gas fast.
When you arrive
Plan to get here about 15 minutes early. We are inside the nZone at 14550 Lee Road in Chantilly. Come to the front desk and we will check you in and show you around.
A coach will come over to meet your child by name. That first hello matters. We want your child to walk onto the mat already knowing someone.
How class starts
Students line up by sash, bow in, and we open in prayer. Then we talk about the virtue we are focusing on that week, like respect, courage, or perseverance, along with a short memory verse. Your child does not need to know any of it yet. They will pick it up fast.
What happens in class
Next comes a warm-up that feels a lot like play: running, jumping, stretching, and games that get the wiggles out. Then we move into the martial arts. In a first class, that usually means a fighting stance, how to make a proper fist, a few basic punches and kicks, and hitting pads.
Throughout class, students answer the coach with "Yes, Coach!" New kids are usually quiet the first few times and loud by the end.
Nobody spars in their first class. Sparring comes much later, once a student is ready, and we build every student up to it step by step.
How class ends
We close with a short devotional that ties the lesson back to the week's virtue, then a closing prayer and a bow out. Some classes end with a game, which kids love.
Where parents are
You are welcome to watch the whole class. Many parents like to see their child's face the first time they land a good kick on a pad. If your child is nervous, sit where they can see you.
After class
This is the part we care about most. After class, one of our coaches will sit down with you and tell you how your child did, what we noticed, and which class fits them best. Little Warriors is for ages 4 to 6, Young Champions is for ages 7 to 12, and Teens and Adults is for 13 and up.
If it is a good fit, we will walk you through how to get started. If you have questions, ask them. There is no pressure.
A verse we come back to often
"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." (Proverbs 22:6)
That is what a first class is: the first step on a long road. We are honored when a family lets us walk it with them.
